SNAIL FARMING: PREVENTING ANT INFESTATION IN SNAIL FARMING



Ant infestation is snail farming has been the fear of  many existing farmers, just like the fear of many poultry farmers could be bird flu or Newcastle disease


Ant infesting a pen is cable of wiping out the whole flock in minutes. The most  painful part of ant infestation is that little or nothing can be done once the snails have been infested on


Hence, prevention is better than cure



COVER YOUR SNAIL PEN: Most ant infested pen are 70% due to poorly pens , broken walls or holes, thereby giving an entrance to the ants.The farmer ensures that there are no holes or uncovered part of the pen to prevent any form of  ant infestation

AVOID LEFT OVER FOODS: After every consumption by snails. It's the duty of the snail attendant to take away left over foods, as the left over foods can become attractant to ants 

DO NOT PLACE ANY ANT ATTRACTANT CLOSE TO YOUR PEN: This simply entails keeping anything can attract ant to you pen far away , ant attractant could include

:-|Ants are attracted to anything damp or that contains stand water in your home

:-|Sugary content also attract ants

:-|Grease: Some ants prefers foods that highin fats and grease.

:-|Seed

:-|Decompose/decomposing matter

All the these should be prevented from coming anywhere close to the snail pen


PLANTING OF ANT REPELLANT : Planting of crops around snail pen to prevent ant Infestation , it's a sure way of making ants and pest generally far from your snail farm. Plant that can repel ants include

:-|Thyme
:-|Tansy
:-|Lavender
:-|Rosemary
:-|Pepper mint

CREATE A TRENCH: A gutter like of about 9cm deep,cemented and pour in any chemical ant repellant 

BE VIGILANT AS A FARMER: Sometimes ants can make there way to a snail pen or close uninvited. Being watchful and vigilant makes you keep watch for any appearance of ants so they can been dealt with before havoc is caused. Every farmer should be more vigilant during the raining season
